PUNE: The Pune unit of the Government Railway Police (GRP) has written a letter to Central Railway authorities requesting the installation of security meshes at the windows of long-distance trains between Pune and Solapur to prevent chain-snatching incidents.
Superintendent of police (GRP, Pune) Prabhakar Budhwant told TOI that since January this year, police have registered 12 chain-snatching incidents in long-distance trains, especially between Bhigwan and Daund railway stations. "Women generally sleep on the lower berths, and their heads lie near the windows," Budhwant said.
Most train windows have iron grills and shutters. But generally, the shutters are never pulled down by passengers before they go to sleep.
"We have suggested to the CR authorities to install security wire mesh guards at the windows of long-distance trains on the Pune-Daund and Daund-Solapur sections of CR," he said.
